The Heatwave Is Over
Start – Wakefield, West Yorkshire
Finish – Harrogate, North Yorkshire
I didn’t really want to take the rest day Yesterday but I was forced into it. 60 miles on two of the hottest days of the year is my biggest achievement as a runner as I’m typically awful in the heat. When I felt ill yesterday morning it didn’t make any sense to force myself to run a long day.
Today was to be the last day of the heat wave so again I made the plan to wake up early and run but it didn’t work out. I’m still struggling to sleep at night. It’s so frustrating.
The heat was nowhere near as bad as yesterday luckily. Spent the entire day inside the Leeds metropolitan area and it wasn’t the prettiest of places. Lots of industrial estates and shopping precincts. This obviously gave me more opportunities for dinner.
The last part of the run into Harrogate was shitty. I bought a litre of orange juice from a shop and drank it in one go. I immediately regretted it on the hill into Harrogate. My stomach dropped. It felt like I was running uphill whilst pregnant. I finally made it to the bathroom in a Marks and Spencer cafe and everything just stayed within me. Eery.
Then I ran along another A road without a footpath. Never fun especially when the road twists and turns on a hill and I’ve no reflective gear on because it’s too fucking hot out.
So that’s it. I’ve survived the heat wave. Tomorrow is to be at least 5C cooler and as I move north it should become milder.
