Running To Lands End From Penzance For The Start Of My 900 Mile Crusade
I got the train down to Penzance today and it went by very quickly thanks to the nice views of the West Country.
I then ran from Penzance to the Costcutter in Sennen where I enjoyed 2 Fentimans Cherry Colas.
My biggest worry was that my bag would be difficult to carry once it was loaded with my clothes. Turns out it’s OK. I had to run up some reasonably steep inclines today and it was good!
I’m carrying 3.6kg on my back and 1kg in my waist belt.
Cornwall is a weird place. I ran through a village called Paul. And another one called Mousehole. Still looking for Pissflange. I loved running through those villages but I made the mistake of switching onto busier A roads later on.
They weren’t fun. I run with high viz but you still get arseholes. My rule is to stay in as much as possible away from traffic. If a driver makes space then I wave. If I get beeped at aggressively then I produce my angry finger. The truth is that I end up waving a lot more than birding. The blog title ‘Friendly Jogger’ wouldn’t appeal to most people’s love of sensationalism though.
As I jogged into Sennen an old man started applauding me. He must have thought I was finishing my 900 mile run. I have a “I’ve just ran 900 miles” face when I get out of bed refreshed in the morning. I’m one of life’s miserable bastards. Fuck it. It’s my heritage.
Tomorrow I am gonna set out about 10am and just head north east at a relaxed pace. I will make a decision at about 5pm where I’m gonna stay. I’ll likely make use of the Instant Book feature in Airbnb. It’s exciting not knowing where I’m gonna be tomorrow. Excitement can very easily turn into panic if I don’t take shit seriously.
As the week progresses it will be interesting to see how my body holds up to the distances. Entering completely new territory here. Hoping to spend a lot of time recovering like the lazy bastard I am.
