Overeating After Running And Binge Eating At Night Is A Serious Problem That Beginning Runners Will Have To Overcome
If you’ve just started running as a way to lose weight you’ll have noticed that your appetite is much greater than before.
You can ruin your weight loss attempts by overeating. It’s extraordinarily easy to do. I naively thought that I could eat what I wanted and still see the scales going downwards.
I’ve managed to control my weight by keeping a food diary over on MyFitnessPal.com and logging when hunger strikes. I try to find times in the day when I don’t feel as hungry and then aim not to eat then.
For instance in the morning I have no appetite whatsoever. I’ve found that if I run on an empty stomach, then I won’t feel hungry until about 10 or 11am.
This defies common medical advice. We are told that we should always eat breakfast first thing. If I eat breakfast then I’ll feel hungrier throughout the morning and it won’t stop.
If I get off to a bad start in the morning, then I’m less likely to run and it’ll turn into a vicious cycle. I’ll be in the house and more likely to eat something that isn’t good for me.
I’ll think ‘What’s the fucking point in running or trying to be healthy today when I’ve already today for myself?’
If I must eat breakfast, then I’ll try to eat something heavier and bulkier like a banana.
Getting off to a good start to the day and week is vital as it sets the tone. I’ve had weeks where I’ve ate so much crap on Monday that by Wednesday I’ll be happy if I manage to maintain my weight rather than gain.
Being on the back foot sucks.
