My First Run Back After The Dublin Marathon Run & My Target For Las Vegas
Sorry for the lack of updates recently, some asshole painter knocked my half full Ginger Beer can into my keyboard, leaving me with no means to mouth off to everyone.
Today I ran for the first time since the Dublin Marathon. It was a standard 9 miler around town and it was liberating to get out there again after 5 days rest.
I was dreading going out as I never know how I’ll be directly after a break.
When you fall out of the way of running it’s difficult to find a way back and I’m always terrified that one day I’ll stop running and slip back into my old routine.
Part of the reason I’m so intense is that I’ve let my weight slip before and I’ve ended up weighing more than when I started into the ‘healthy living regime’.
I read the Ben Does Life tumblr blog quite a lot and it’s written by a runner who went from 350 pounds to 210 but let it all slip and is back up to where he started again.
I know that it’s important to take a rest from jogging now and again, but that blog in particular shows how quickly you undo all of your hard work.
I need to be vigilant.
The Rock N Roll Las Vegas Marathon is only 2 weeks away tomorrow.
And I’m in the strange position where my longest training run for it is the 26.4 miles ran in Dublin last Monday!
I’m very excited about it and I’m still open to the idea of shooting for a personal best on the day.
I’m in the strange position of having recorded a personal best on each of my last 5 marathons and it would feel strange not recording one in the next race, but it’s not that fucking important.
I’m there to have a good time above all.
But like most runners I do have that competitive edge that I can’t subdue and it sometimes makes my life more difficult.
If I can go out tomorrow and record a 16 mile run at a 9:45 min/mile average then I’ll be very confident in my ability to go faster than Dublin.
I’d rather put the work in now in training than struggle in Vegas. If I can start off with that 9:45 pace on my next run and keep it going until mile 20, then I’ll be there.
Fuck knows what sort of state I’ll be in on race day though. The effect of too many buffets may well render me incapacitated and some poor soul may have to cart me around the course in a mobility scooter.
If that happens, then I’ll shoot for a world record marathon time on a scooter.
It will be a fun day regardless of what happens!
Only 10 days now until I fly off to America. I’ve spent the last few days just sniffing my dollars to build up my anticipation. It’s gonna be fun.
