Is Running Embarrassing? Are You Self Conscious When You Run Outside?
If you’re anything like me then you hate how you look in your race photographs. I always seem to be pulling some kind of demented sex face and it’s made me feel quite embarrassed about running in the past.
I’m also self conscious about the way I run and I feel embarrassed when I pass people in the street. I’ve even started to cross roads to try to get as far away from anyone who could possibly judge me.
Should we feel embarrassed as runners?
No. If anything we should be proud that we’re trying to make positive changes in our lives. The truly embarrassing thing would be to continue to gain weight and become more sedentary.
At some point you will suffer at the hands of an idiot who wants to make fun of you when you’re running outside. Who is that person to try to knock your efforts to better yourself? What stake do they have in your life? I know of people who have received verbal abuse in the street when jogging and have refused to do it again because they were that devastated.
In the past I’ve felt like throwing a punch at these dickheads as they don’t seem to realise the pain they are causing. They view it as just ‘banter’.
Only you know the reasons why you started to run in the first place. If you’re moving closer to your goals then that should be your only concern. You can’t control what sort of dickheads are set loose on the streets. All you can do is look after yourself to the best of your ability.
You can only pray that one day these idiots will shout abuse at the wrong person and get their heads kicked in repeatedly. Luckily for us these people are in the minority and most of the general public will be greatly supportive of your efforts to improve your own life.
