I’m Going To Run 5,000km This Year
4504.8km / 5000km
Running out of steam with the blogging again so I’ve set myself the challenge of running 5000km this year.
495km to go. I’ve only 11 nights left here in Portugal so I’m gonna really shoot for the target of 5000km for shits and giggles. I have to run 11 miles every day to achieve it. That sounds like a lot but I easily did 29 half marathons back to back in February 2016.
Weather is perfect for the next week so I might as well be ambitious. I’m the type of man who needs a plan otherwise I tend to fail badly. Had no goals last December so was just aimlessly running a mile a night in the pissing rain wishing I had a mission. HERE’S YOUR MISSION. It makes no sense and it’s just a fucking distraction, but life is a distraction is it not?
The plan is to run more than 11 miles a day on average whilst I’m still in Portugal and then take it easier when I’m back home. To have any chance of this I need to be at 4650km by the end of the week. It seems impossible but then so did fucking LEJOG and look what happened there.
Checkpoints for this challenge.
4650km by Sunday 9th December
4800km by Sunday 16th December
4900km by Sunday 23rd December
5000km by Sunday 30th December
Am I mad? No. I’m just bored.
20km today. Had planned on running to Lagos following a route created by a mad cyclist but it ended up being so laughably wrong. Mad bastard rode in circles and had me chasing my tail like a drunken dog around the centre of Portimao. Some beautiful looks from confused people. Then to finish it all off the route went up onto the fucking motorway.
Rest of the run was shit. All along busy roads with farm dogs on both sides. Misery. Couldn’t drown out the bastards with earphones so I just screamed incoherently at them.
Stopped in Alvor for some lunch. It was pretty peaceful but Portugese culture is different to British culture. Everyone loiters and it sets me on edge. The people who loiter in London want to stab you. The people here want to chat. It’s like Craggy Island without the in-fucking.
Excellent people but ‘chill’ is not in my vocab and that’s a problem I guess.
