I Made It To Scotland
Start – Harrogate, North Yorkshire
Finish – Bonchester Bridge, Scotland
Hey cunts. Remember me?
I haven’t been blogging recently as I’ve been properly exhausted. I’m almost 700 miles into my journey and I’ve been struggling with energy of late. I was maybe a little bit naive when I thought I could easily do this and still blog every day.
I checked into my hotel here in Scotland at 11am so I’ve finally had time to just lie down and relax and that’s why I’m writing. I’m refreshed.
So the last week took me from Harrogate up to Richmond, North Yorkshire, some place outside Barnard Bridge, Durham, Corbridge, Northumberland and then to Byrness, Northumberland last night.
Yesterday was extremely difficult. I followed the A68 from Corbridge to Byrness on a Sunday when the road is full of motorcyclists and my god, it was terrifying. It didn’t help that the road was as undulating as fuck. I don’t mind hills but the A68 has these bastard downhills that are immediately followed up with steep climbs. It’s a wanker.
It doesn’t help that the A68 is the only real way into Scotland from the area I was in. I was playing Lejog on hard mode.
As I got within 10 miles of the border shit got pretty fast and the road slowed down a bit.
I took this on the approach to Byrness last night it was a beautiful night after the earlier chaos.
I stayed in a hostel last night and I got a terrible night’s sleep. I tend to fidget in bed. I’m restless whilst asleep and when I’m awake and I was aware I was keeping this guy awake.
So I got up at 6am and decided to run to the border without breakfast. I wanted breakfast but I did not want the 2 hour wait so I fucking went for it. The climb up to the Scottish Border is notoriously tough but luckily I didn’t have any issues after spending 48 hours on the A68. I was fucking ready for the challenge.
It features a climb up from 200m to 415m. I was expecting it to be a lot worse but the only real pain came from the truck drivers blasting past me.
After the border I immediately got off the A68 and chose another quieter A road that goes in the direction of Hawick. I wanted to try to get there but it did not happen. I could not find anywhere to buy food and drink. I felt so ill. So I checked into a hotel at Borchester Bridge which is where I am at now.
I’m only 55 miles from Edinburgh so I’ll be there by Wednesday. It finally feels like I’m gonna complete this. In Derby it felt never ending.
