Joining A Gym For The First Time Ever Made Me Feel Fat Again. And Why Rugby Is 100% Gay.
Today I joined the gym. I felt uneasy joining for a number of reasons.
Being back there reminded me of my school days. In my school they forced us to play a game called Rugby. I was not fond of Rugby. I was a football man.
If you’re not familiar with Rugby it is a sport much like American Football where grown men touch other grown men for extended periods of time.
I was truly fucking terrible at this game.
I was that bad that my school Rugby side invented a team I could be part of at an away fixture. We had the ‘A’ team, the ‘B’ team and the ‘C’ team. There was the ‘C Reserves’.
I was the C Reserves. This did not do wonders for my self esteem at the time.
Being forced to play Rugby also made me ‘confused’ as a teenager. Here I was, a gangly 6 foot man trying to avoid sticking my head up other men and at the same time being labelled as ‘a gay’ for not wanting to be part of the action.
Now, as a heterosexual liberal I’ve nothing against consensual man love. But being forced into it and then being seen as a leper for refusing to take part is not cool.
No wonder I spent my formative years, confused, listening to David Bowie, the Manics and Placebo.
Anyway I joined the Gym and I’m hopefully going to claim it back for myself as something I enjoy doing. I must say that all of the negative memories of being shit at anything physical in school drives me on to actually succeed on some level with the running, even if it is only breaking a 4 hour marathon.
That’d be enough.
My plans for the Gym are simple. I will go 10 times a month and use the cross trainer and stationary bikes as much as possible.
On the long Run tomorrow!
Tomorrow is long run Sunday and the plan is to run 13 miles at a slow pace.
I don’t have to start officially training for Paris until December 2nd but I’d rather start now so that I don’t encounter any problems with the long run come spring time next year.
Tomorrow will mark 7 half marathons in 7 weeks. If I can keep this going into the New Year then I’ll be in an excellent position come January.
