Entering Races Like Half Marathons Provides Daily Long Distance Running Motivation!
If you’re currently struggling to motivate yourself to run and you haven’t a race planned in the coming months, then my advice would be to enter one as soon as possible.
There’s nothing like the fear of failure and/or the anticipation of success to get your ass in gear!
Once you’ve got a few races under your belt, you’ll want to enter more and more, which in turn will motivate you to run even further.
When I look at last year and my monthly mileage totals, it’s easy to see that in the months where I didn’t run so much (May/June), I didn’t have any races to train for.
My training became completely directionless, I drank too much alcohol and I ate nothing but junk food. I became a mess once more.
Without having a race to focus on, I seemed to lose all focus on my health.
Nowadays I try to ensure that I have a run coming up within the next 2 months at all times. It might seem a bit strenuous at first, but believe me your body gets adjusted to it after a while. You quickly get hooked on the pre-run adrenaline and the unmissable camaraderie that comes with running long distance events!
When I first started out running, I’d worry about losing the will to run and packing in the sport altogether. Now that I enter races regularly this is not an option. I know that I’ll be a long distance runner for the rest of my life and to me that’s extremely exciting rather than daunting!
