My Review Of The Cardiff Half Marathon 2011
Of the 3 half marathons I’ve ran this year, this way by far the most enjoyable as I paced myself well and left a lot for the end. The only problem with the ending was that it was totally crowded out with people so it was difficult to pass people, especially when coming back around the Bay.
The worst part of it all was having to walk back into Cardiff from the finish line. It was only 1.5 miles but it felt like 15. I just wanted to be home at that stage. But I went to Burger King instead and ate much.
Here’s the Garmin Connect route.
Can’t wait until I do my next one. Feel like I’ve lost a bit of fitness since Vegas though. Far too many Reese’s cups, buffets and Burger King’s!
My only real gripe about the race is that the race was definitely too long this year. I asked other runners what they thought about this and they said much the same thing. My watch read 13.4 miles at the end. I’m not sure if it was 0.3 miles too long but it definitely felt like more than the usual half marathon distance.
Getting to Cardiff in the first place was an absolute nightmare. My hotel was 6 miles out of town and I decided to get the bus to the neighbourhood that it was in. I managed to miss my stop by 14 fucking stops. Instead of being in North East Cardiff I was in West Cardiff.
I then had to call a taxi to my hotel which cost even more than it would have if I’d been smart enough to hail one from the City Centre.
Plus, Cardiff isn’t great for transportation. On a Sunday there is no bus to the airport. Which meant I had to get another fucking taxi which cost £40. Turned out to be a pretty expensive weekend.
