Start – Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire
Finish – Birmingham City Centre, West Midlands
I started in a place called Clifford Chambers which is about 2 miles outside Stratford city centre.
I ran to the start of the Stratford canal for breakfast. By 10am it was already over 20C so I had to prepare accordingly.
I ended up mixing both of the drinks together and I ran with the slush in my hand like a true athlete. Whenever I got thirsty I buried my face in the ice and took a bite. Tasty.
The best thing about the run was the pubs along the canals. I stopped in about 3 of them and tried to eat a side dish in each. Usually I go for onion rings or ice cream. It’s important to try to eat something to keep my energy levels up.
The heat made it a lot more difficult than I expected it to be but it was great being off road for the entire day. At least I could just focus on moving forward.
I made it to Kings Norton in Birmingham just after dinner time and I was delighted with myself until I checked the map. I was at least 10k outside the city centre. So I started running again and eventually made it to the City Centre. By this point my body was covered in hot spots from chaffing and insect bites. Thankfully I’d remembered to apply sun lotion before starting.
A cyclist almost crashed into me just outside Birmingham University. He wasn’t wearing a helmet and he was veering from side to side. I was going to mouth off at him but Atomic by Blondie was blasting out of my speakers and I was caught doing my falsetto. Difficult to appear tough in that situation.
