Arrived in Somerset
Start location – Torrington, North Devon
End location – Exford, Somerset.
I woke up at 8am and my phone was working properly after it fucked up last night. I had a good fried breakfast. The weather although windy was a marked improvement on yesterday. Sunny spells with strong winds.
I ran from Great Torrington to the services outside Barnstaple. I wanted to reach the town centre but Google Maps lied about the distance and I was starting to get hungry.
So I stopped and ate 3 Oreo Krushems at KFC and decided to pick a location in the Exmoor National Park to stay overnight. I’d thought about running to Minehead but it was well over 31 miles away from Barnstaple meaning I’d have had to run 50 miles in a day to make it.
Instead I chose Exford.
I was expecting the terrain after Barnstaple to be hilly as hell as it’s on the approach to the National Park but for the first 7 miles it was flat and this inspired me to try to move a little faster.
The hills started a mile or two after this and before I knew it I was 300m above sea level. And it kept climbing.
The hills around Exmoor National Park beat the shit out of my body. I was climbing up to 450m elevation with 26 miles in my legs. It was daunting but I got through it by relaxing and slowing down as much as I could in the more testing parts.
I soon made it to Somerset and from there my morale improved dramatically and I began to love running again.
I made it to my accommodation here in Exford at just after 7pm and it has given me around 15 hours of recovery time.
I always hate the thought of running tomorrow at this time of night. Seems impossible given how stiff my body is but all I have to do is take that first step and let the rest sort itself out. Thinking about running now won’t make it any easier tomorrow. I need to use this time to recover.
I am trying to plan a hotel for tomorrow that’s between 20 to 25 miles away from Exford.
My rule is that I don’t plan accommodation until the day of my run. It keeps my options open and it allows me to be free of the misery of compulsively checking Google Maps. I can just travel North East and hope for the best.
The only exceptions are the days after long days. I need that target for motivation when my body is tired.
I’m happy with how this is going at the minute. I’m averaging over 50k a day which is more than I could have hoped for.
