A Three Week Inverse Marathon Taper On An 18 Week Marathon Training Schedule – I Am Going Mad
I do not enjoy the tapering phase of the marathon.
Everything suddenly looks edible, whether it’s the Feasters range of microwavable chicken burgers or next doors cat.
All sorts of imaginary aches and pains surface. The words ‘STRESS FRACTURE’ appear in my mind’s eye like a light above a recording studio door.
This time around I’ve did things a little differently. Instead of gradually winding down my mileage, I completely dropped it off from 60.2 to 14 in one week. Since then I’ve stepped it up to 29 and I expect to run the same distance this week too.
Fortunately I’ve already ran 25 miles so that leaves all but one short, slow run before all of this is over and I can get down to actually preparing mentally for the marathon itself on Monday.
Am I scared? Yes. Am I prepared? I think/hope so. If it wasn’t for that 19.2 mile run 4 weeks ago I would not feel as hopeful.
