Receiving Verbal Abuse Whilst Running A Hilly Half Marathon Run From Drunken Street Gangsters.
I’m a little disappointed with today’s run. I wanted to go further than last Sunday’s 13.6 miles and I stopped at 13.3 knowing that I had more in me. I seem to be stuck on the 13 mile distance at the minute. I know it’s more mental than physical but I just seem to break at 13 and stop. Next week I’ll aim for 14 and go slower.
The run itself was good though. The hardest bit was the 50 meter climb over a mile on the 9th mile. That hill has killed me in the past, but this time I kept my composure and it proved to be relatively simple. I silenced my inner critic and just focused on putting one foot in front of the other until I hit the brow.
I had a bit of trouble from some wannabe gangsters at mile 7. They were in a group of 5 and I seen 2 run across the street after me. They were trying to mock the way that I was running. Since my running technique in itself makes a mockery of running, they were never in any real danger of offending me.
I cannot help the fact that I run like I’ve got a traffic cone shoved up my hole. Especially when I’m chaffed between the legs like I was today.
Fortunately, they went away after I told them that I had another 6 miles to run and that they could keep jogging with me if they wanted to. Just shows you that it sometimes pays off to just ignore dickheads and to continue to do what you set out to do.
If they had started any trouble I’d have yelled “RAPE!!” and ran in their general direction just to stun them into thinking it was either a threat from myself or a cry for help to the public.
So I’ve finished this week with a grand total of 36 miles over 4 runs. That’s an average of 9 miles. If I could increase that average to 10 then I’ll be back into 40mpw territory.
I’m confident that I’ll get to that point by Christmas if I just keep plugging away.
Tomorrow will be my first day at the gym too. Looking forward to it already!
Update : I was meaning to post this last night but I forgot. Here’s a list of my Sunday long runs since August 26th. Shows a lot of consistency but not a lot of progress distance wise.
