A Little Bit Of ‘Speedwork’ And Hill Training Today.
Speedwork is a word I despise. I dunno if it’s because I object to the word ‘work’, but it’s something that invokes the thought of resistance and pain.
Those are two words that I don’t associate with running. For me it’s always about joy and an outlet to obliterate negative emotions stirring within.
Today I did a little ‘speedwork’ on my second run of the day. I also did a bit of hill running too. The heat was intense outside and the sweat was pissing out of me. I just kept it slowish for the first 2 miles until I hit the hill.
Then the real challenge began! The hill only lasts for half a mile but it becomes quite steep at a point. It was here that I hit a wall and began to slow up. I had thoughts of myself slowing to a halt, falling backwards and rolling back down the hill like a fat Sonic The Hedgehog.
Fortunately the hill brow came and I rejoiced. It took me about 0.25 mile to get my breath back. From there I pushed a little and managed to average just below a 10 minute mile for the first time in quite a while. I’m delighted considering it was my 2nd run of the day.
I’m on 34.5 miles for the week now. An easy 6 miler tomorrow and a 10 on Sunday and I’ll have had 3 50 mile weeks in a row. Before last week I hadn’t ran 2 50 mile weeks in a row.
Just checked my stats and I’ve ran 31 times in 30 days. I feel like I’m getting faster and stronger even though my diet is a mess still.
The key is to keep your running consistent and in order to do that you have to actually enjoy it!
