A Better Day
Start – Cheltenham
Finish – Stratford upon Avon
Today was much better than yesterday. I spent most of it running on a B Road that wasn’t too busy. Whenever it started to become boring I’d come across a dangerous part with no footpath and fast cars which kept me on my toes.
I was hopping through the counties like a madman. First I was in Gloucestershire. Then Worcestershire. Then Gloucestershire again and finally Warwickshire.
The hardest part of this is the traffic. Without cars I could coast and just turn on autopilot. It’s shitty always being on my guard. It depletes my mental energy.
I got beeped at 3 times today. I automatically assumed that these were people complaining about me being on the road. So I gave them the bird. Then it dawned on me that these could actually be well wishers. That’s the problem with car horns. ‘Go Matt’ and ‘get the fuck off the road cunt’ sound exactly the same. I don’t have the time to read facial expressions. I’m too busy trying to stay upright.
I didn’t really stop anywhere for long today. I had an impromptu picnic in a place called Broadway which was lovely. Other than that I went into a lot of pubs looking for crisps and coke.
I managed to get to my hotel tonight without getting lost once. I bought some new wireless speakers yesterday which I’ve hooked up to the Google Maps satnav service and the directions are blasted out of my backpack. If people can hear the directions and I’m a little lost they can help point me in the right direction.
The backpack speakers are a bit dangerous. Sometimes I forget to turn then off when I’m in having a quiet meal and my sweat will mysteriously activate the Play button and some godawful fucking racket will start. Old ladies hate Alice In Chains.
Tomorrow I’m looking to get to at least Birmingham. I’m back on track after a really awful day yesterday and it’s important to get the momentum working for me again.
