A Belated Weigh In And Why You Should Just Keep Going Especially If Your Run Is Going Bad.
A bit late with my weigh in this week but here it is!
And I’ve gained! After running 53 miles last week I’ve somehow managed to gain weight even though I wasn’t eating as much as I usually do.
Sometimes this weight loss shit seems completely foreign to me!
Monday was a rest day after the 12 miler on Sunday but I managed to get out for a 6.4 mile run today. It was one of those runs where I hated (nearly) every fucking step of it. Occasionally I’ll get bad runs like this and I’ll search for the reasons why it’s going so bad in my head.
Usually I’ll return to the notion that I’m just a shit runner. Then I tell the self-pitying side of my brain to fuck off and carry on.
If I’ve learnt anything about running from the last 18 months it is that your worst runs define you as a runner. To get better you need to push through the bad runs and to try to notch the crap jogs into OK or better ones.
Case in point, today I was thinking of giving up at about 5 miles and just leaving it at a 10:25 pace the rest of the way back. I dunno how, but I just stopped thinking altogether for about half a mile and I got to the 5.5 mile point and thought “What can I do to make this run a good run?”.
I just continued on and gave it the best I could at the time and ended up with a 6.4 miler at a 10:16 pace which is a LOT better than a 5 miler at 10:25.
Sometimes even just continuing on for 0.25 of a mile can change how you feel about a run in such a dramatic way.
