Derby to Sheffield In A Day
Start – Derby, Derbyshire
Finish – Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Today I ran 39 miles on the hottest day of the year.
Running through Derbyshire was challenging. It was never ending and I seemed to be getting abuse off assholes for no reason.
The rolling hills were a major problem. I normally love them but in the heat they are a completely different beast. I had to stop to catch my breath a lot. Any time I became too warm I stopped to let myself recover. There was no possible way I could have battled relentlessly in the heat. Every time I spotted a bus shelter I sat down for a while.
Derbyshire wasn’t all bad. Some of the views were amazing but I will always associate the place with my bad day in Derby on Saturday. It’s the only county so far where I’ve received a lot of hostility. I think it was just drunk people and the heat but I never got this shit in any of the other places I’ve been.
I had to be smart about today.
My heat aversion tactics were key. I reached Chesterfield at 6pm and went into a Chiquito for an hour and then a Harvester for another hour. By this time the heat had died down a few Celsius and the power of the Sun was nowhere near as strong.
I got to my hotel at 1am after I got lost on the outskirts of Sheffield.
